Coins For A Cause UPDATE
Posted Nov 05 2007
The staff, students and families of RCS are happy to sponsor Thomas Muriithi, a 14-year-old orphan who lives with his grandmother Grace Wanjiju with their "Coins for a Cause" money so that he can continue his education in Kenya. For many years he had not attended school and is currently in the 5th grade. They live on a shamba. A shamba is a forested area of land where the local farmers are allowed to grow food but must also tend young trees that have been planted to encourage reforestation. Inadequate rainfall makes it difficult to grow maize, beans and potatoes, making it necessary to use irrigation. Grace commented, "I will be so thankful when you bring water for irrigation. In our area, water is so dirty most of the time that we become sick. We suffer in a disease called typhoid." The family home is made of timber and iron sheets and has a dirt floor.

Thomas wants to be a teacher, and his favorite subjects are English, Math, and Science. His favorite color is green and his favorite food is githeri, a mixture of beans and maize. "I never knew my father and my mother died when she was 20 years old," Thomas said. "In school I work hard, and I have become #2. I go to church" For fun he enjoys athletics such as football and high jumping, and he likes to read. Thomas’s best friend at school is Isaac Wachira. Isaac has requested prayers for his own health and happiness and is a very joyful boy.

When school gets out each day, Thomas helps his grandmother with irrigating the shamba. He says, "Thank you that you want me to succeed in my education. I am so thankful. I would like to meet you. May God bless you for helping me and finding me a sponsor. Be blessed for your good work"
