The mission of Roseland Christian School is to “develop academically excellent servants of Christ’s Kingdom.” As educators in a Christian institution, we have been assigned the task of training students in the area of academics and Christian servanthood. The Bible is full of scriptures that speak to serving others:
“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.”
Hebrews 10:24
”Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”
I John 3:18.
“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”
Galatians 6:10.
Jesus himself said in Matthew 20:28,
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Last school year the students of RCS donated over $1000 for our “Coins for a Cause” project. For the 2008/2009 school year, we would like to “let our light so shine” by having each grade perform a service project. Each teacher will decide upon the appropriate project for his or her class and all projects will be cleared by administration.
As our students are trained up in the way that they should go, we will not neglect Christ’s example of being a servant. We are Christ’s ambassadors here on earth. What better way to represent Jesus and show the love of God than to serve others?

Early into this school year I recognized the excitement my first graders exude when I tell them we are going to begin our day with singing. The class loves to learn new songs, and they always ask if we can sing just one more. It brings me joy when I hear the voices of the students praising God, and I wanted to be able to share that with others. Project Light (where each class does a service project in the community) seemed like a great opportunity to share our singing with the community.
In October the class took a trip to The Victory Center, a neighborhood assisted living facility. We arrived to a warm welcome on the smiling faces of many residents. To my delight, the students were very excited and they sang several of our favorite songs without any stage fright! The joy of the residents was apparent from the smiles on their faces. Our songs were accompanied with clapping and followed by much applause.
Before leaving, the first grade students passed out stuffed animals to each resident as a way for them to remember our visit. It was a delightful trip and the students were able to experience first hand the happiness that comes from giving and sharing with others in the community.

During the holidays it can be very easy to get caught up in all the commercialism, but the real reason for the season is a giving of a different kind. It’s not just about gifts. It’s not about owning the latest gadget or coolest clothes. It’s really about giving the gift of the human spirit, about sharing and caring, and in a culture like ours that message too often gets lost. Yet all across the world there are people who really get the true meaning, which was the theme in my second grade classroom.
I wanted my students to learn that it’s not always about receiving, but God is pleased when we give to others. This topic became extremely meaningful after learning many of my classroom parents had lost their jobs due to the economic crisis facing the United States today.
My class sponsored a coat drive to help keep someone warm this wintry season. The coat drive ran for a month. There were bins overflowing in the hallways from the huge response to the drive. The class collected nearly 50 coats, which were donated to Roseland Christian Ministries, a not-for-profit community organization that offers services to those in need.
As the kids sorted the coats, their smiles were infectious to watch. They were very excited to know someone would be happy and warm this cold and blustery season.

In December the third grade class made Christmas cards for the men and women serving our country overseas. We wanted to remind our soldiers that we love them and that we appreciate the sacrifices that they make for us to have freedom. We also wanted to spread Christmas cheer so we spent a morning cutting out snowflakes, snowmen, and Christmas trees. In our cards we expressed our gratitude for the sacrifices made- especially around the holiday times when our soldiers may feel especially far away from their families. This was an experience to be remembered by the third grade class.
